THE CONSCIOUS CONSUMER: HOW TO SHOP MORE SUSTAINABLY

We all want our future to be one with cleaner air, no plastic pollution and cleaner water. But how do we achieve this when it seems there’s no light at the end of the tunnel?

Something we need to understand is that WE as consumers control what retailers sell. If we choose to NOT purchase products that are unsustainable, then supermarkets, shops and bigger retailers will have to delist that product or brand.

So here is how we can shop more sustainably and become conscious consumers.

  1. Understand that we have a lot of power in spending our hard-earned money. Choose choice rather than convenience.

  2. When shopping, always take your own bags to reduce plastic consumption.

  3. Avoid products with plastic packaging – it is actually incredibly expensive for brands and small businesses to invest in eco-friendly packaging. Support them by purchasing their products instead of a high street competitor that is half the price. This will make a huge difference for that brand.

  4. Fact check the details – is a product marked “made with 88% recycled paper”… that’s great but what about the other 12 percent?

  5. Share sustainable brands with friends and family!

  6. Contact the retailers and demand sustainable brands you love and believe in. It takes two minutes of your time but this could make a huge difference,

  7. Learn more about sustainability and research the brands you currently buy.

  8. Walk to the shop if you can instead of using your car.

  9. Buy second-hand.

  10. Look for certifications ( OEKO-TEX, GOTS, FSC, FAIR TRADE ETC..)

  11. Buy less, buy better, you can buy things that are timeless and high-quality enough to last a long time.

  12. Investigate brands’ delivery and packaging methods.

  13. Read the labels when shopping.
